Finding Your Niche: How One Questionnaire Launched This Specialist Cleaning Business with Stephen Yates, MD of IT Cleaning

In today's episode I chat with Stephen Yates, Founder and Managing Director of IT Cleaning, one of the first specialist data centre cleaning companies in the UK.

Stephen launched IT Cleaning over 20 years ago after stumbling into the niche by accident. While researching for his masters’ degree in marketing, Stephen sent questionnaires to IT managers about telephone cleaning. In return, they asked whether he was able to clean data centres and IT cleaning was borne with a contact list of 60 potential clients.

Since being launched, IT Cleaning has been at the forefront of cleaning data centres, server rooms, comms rooms and broadcast equipment.

We talk about:

• Why Stephen had to switch the subject of his dissertation before he was able to launch IT Cleaning as a business;

• How the biggest challenge to starting was getting insurance for a new type of cleaning;

• The simple approach he takes to retaining staff;
